Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying these drugs should be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
